The general
elections to the Indian Parliament
is the biggest democratic exercise in the world, with an electorate
of
about 620 million. As many as 4648 candidates contested the
elections
in 538 of the 543 constituencies where polling could be held in
September/October
1999. (Polling was postponed in five constituencies.) The
National
Democratic Alliance, led by the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP), won a
simple
majority in the House.
